More than 140 foreign children successfully passed testing in the Russian language and were consequently enrolled in Nizhny Novgorod schools. This was reported to NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" by the regional Ministry of Education and Science.
According to federal legislation, since April 1, 2025, foreign citizens and stateless persons in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast have been tested on their knowledge of the Russian language. The main aim of the assessment is to determine whether a child has sufficient command of the language to successfully master school curricula at the primary, basic and secondary general education levels. Passing the test is a mandatory condition for enrollment in school.
Seventy-two organizations have been designated to conduct the testing in the region — they are located in all municipalities. The full list of institutions is available on the website of the Ministry of Education and Science of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.
From April to the present, 267 applications from foreign citizens have been submitted to schools in the region, the relevant ministry clarified. Most of them are from families from Azerbaijan, Armenia and Uzbekistan. During this period, 247 children underwent testing.
As a result of the assessment, 143 children successfully completed the tasks, while 104 were unable to overcome the language barrier. As a result, 107 pupils were enrolled in the first grade, six in the fourth, seven in the fifth, and five each in the second, third and sixth grades. One student was admitted to each of the eighth and tenth grades, and three to the ninth.
Those who did not pass the examination are offered additional Russian language instruction by the schools so that the children have the opportunity to prepare and retake the test to confirm their knowledge.
