An NNGU professor explained why the world needs neuromorphic computers.

Nizhny Novgorod professor Susanna Gordleeva spoke about the prospects of neuromorphic technologies and the capabilities of "intelligent" artificial intelligence. Her lecture took place on September 26 at the Mayak Academy cultural and educational center as part of the federal marathon "Knowledge.Firsts", dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the nuclear industry.
Speaking to schoolchildren and students, the director of the Research Institute of Neurosciences at Nizhny Novgorod State University and head of the Neuromorphic Computing Center of the Nizhny Novgorod IT University explained that neuromorphic models of artificial intelligence are built on the principles of the human brain. They use mathematical equations to describe the processes of signal generation and transmission in neural networks, which makes it possible to create algorithms for neuroprocessors.
According to the scientist, combining such algorithms with neuromorphic "hardware" will make it possible to develop energy-efficient computing systems capable of processing vast amounts of data in real time. This direction, Gordleeva emphasized, has fundamental importance for understanding how the brain works and could lead to the creation of new methods for treating neurodegenerative diseases, as well as the development of neurointerfaces, prosthetics technologies, and control systems for unmanned robotics.
She also noted that active work is being carried out in this area in Nizhny Novgorod: neuroprocessors based on memristors are being created, neuromorphic AI technologies are being studied, and mathematical models of neural networks and neurocontrol systems are being developed.
Answering audience questions, the professor stressed that she does not consider the threat of the "enslavement" of humanity by artificial intelligence to be relevant. In her words, today AI is, first and foremost, a useful tool that has already become part of everyday life and that it is important to use sensibly and beneficially.
It is worth recalling that Olympic champion Alina Zagitova also spoke at the marathon in Nizhny Novgorod. She told those present about her path to the heights of sport.
