A new water treatment technology will be introduced at the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station.

      At the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station, where the first phase of a large-scale reconstruction is being completed, a tour was held for students of NNGASU. Future environmental specialists were able to see in practice how wastewater treatment is carried out in one of the country's largest cities. This was reported by the press service of the Nizhny Novgorod mayor's office.

      Mikhail Likhotnikov, adviser to the general director of JSC "Teploenergo" — the managing organization of JSC "Nizhegorodsky Vodokanal" — noted that the station receives more than 600,000 cubic meters of wastewater daily, and after modernization will be able to treat up to 790,000 cubic meters.

      Likhotnikov emphasized that the effluents come not only from Nizhny Novgorod but also from neighboring areas — Bor, Kstovo and the Bogorodsky District. Such volume and levels of pollution directly affect the Volga's ecosystem. That is why the modernization provides for the introduction of new technologies, including nitrification and denitrification processes. This is a biological treatment method that allows for the effective removal of the main pollutants from wastewater.

      During the nearly two-hour tour, the students visited key facilities of the station: the screen building, grit chambers, radial clarifiers and aeration tanks. They were able to see which technologies are used to achieve high treatment standards.

      Earlier, a wet barrier was installed on the station's premises. Its equipment and technical solutions were developed in Russia and are already being used at large enterprises and MSW landfills in other regions.

      It was reported that work at the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station will continue until 2029.
