Remote monitoring covers almost 70% of Nizhny Novgorod's forests.

The Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Gleb Nikitin, held a working meeting with the head of the Federal Forestry Agency (Rosleskhoz), Ivan Sovetnikov. During the talks, the parties discussed key directions for the development of the region’s forest sector: modernization of the technical base of forest firefighting services, expansion of remote monitoring, and the carrying out of forest management activities.
One of the priority issues was increasing the coverage of the forest fund by the remote monitoring system. In 2025, 2.6 million hectares are already under observation from space — that is 68% of all the region’s forests. This approach makes it possible to effectively detect and prevent violations, including illegal logging.
According to 2024 data, the volume of illegally harvested timber recorded by monitoring amounted to 815 cubic meters. That is five times less than the average over the past five years. The reduction in figures became possible thanks to systematic work and the implementation of modern technologies.
Equipping regional forest firefighting services with machinery and equipment is being carried out within the federal project “Forest Conservation,” which is part of the national project “Ecological Well-being.” This project is aimed at the protection, restoration and sustainable use of forest resources.
The head of Rosleskhoz, Ivan Sovetnikov, noted the high level of organization of forestry in the region: “Nizhny Novgorod Oblast annually demonstrates high efficiency in the field of forest management. This is the result of the coordinated and responsible work of the regional team focused on preserving natural wealth.”
Gleb Nikitin emphasized that protection and restoration of forests remain key tasks for the oblast.
“Forests occupy more than four million hectares of our territory. We attach great importance to their protection and reproduction. Within the national project ‘Ecological Well-being’ alone, restoration activities cover about 14,000 hectares annually. Federal support in the form of equipment and expanded monitoring makes our work more effective,” said the head of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.
Earlier it was reported that Nikitin and Sovetnikov planted an avenue of trees in Victory Park together with schoolchildren.
Recall that since 2025 the national project “Ecological Well-being,” developed at the direction of President Vladimir Putin, has come into effect in Russia. It combined the tasks of the previous national project “Ecology” and includes six federal directions: “General Cleanup,” “Water of Russia,” “Preservation of Biodiversity and Development of Ecological Tourism,” “Forest Conservation,” “Circular Economy,” and “Clean Air.”
