Andrey Chugunov: "The commission will be the first step toward protecting teachers"

A Commission for the Protection of Teachers' Honor and Dignity is being created in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The commission is intended to mediate disputes between teachers, children and their parents, as well as to consider labor disputes. Journalist Andrey Chugunov expressed his opinion about the commission being created.
"The first reports about the establishment of such a commission at the federal level appeared at the end of August. And already on 16 September the website of the Russian Government reported that the commission had been created. There are not yet such commissions in the regions, although programs to protect teachers' rights were previously introduced in Tatarstan and Krasnodar Krai, but little is known about the results of their work," the expert noted.
"Why is this needed? Let's recall the scandal at the end of last year, when a teacher at one of the Sormovo schools posted a photo from pole-dancing classes on social media, after which she received a considerable amount of public condemnation and a stern reprimand from management.
Our region is unlikely to be particularly different from most others. Thus, according to some surveys, about a third of teachers have encountered bullying in their practice, almost three quarters of respondents did not receive support in conflicts that arose, and one in seven resigned after conflicts with parents, like that very Sormovo teacher.
The reasons for this situation, unfortunately, are standard: the low status of the profession, the attitude toward teachers as 'service staff,' and a considerable burden of paperwork. But an equally well-known way out of the situation has not yet been found. And the commission being created is unlikely to be a panacea, but may be a first step toward systemic protection of teachers. But without a change in society's attitude toward a profession that was once highly respected, the problem of bullying will remain relevant for a long time," the journalist concluded.
