The Nizhny Novgorod region took 35th place in the ranking of Russian regions with the highest median wages, compiled by RIA Novosti experts.

Analysts note that the persistent shortage of labor in the job market is intensifying competition among employers and contributing to wage growth. Nationwide, the average nominal accrued wage in the second quarter of 2025 approached 100,000 rubles, increasing by 16% compared with the same period last year.

At the same time, experts emphasize that the average wage does not always accurately reflect the real situation in the labor market due to a significant spread between high and low incomes. The median wage — the amount above and below which 50% of workers earn — is considered a more objective indicator.

Median wage levels vary significantly across regions. This is due to a number of factors, including the level of economic development, climatic conditions and the resource orientation of the economy.

To analyze the purchasing power of incomes, RIA Novosti specialists compared median wages by region (excluding personal income tax) for the period from April to June 2025 with the cost of a fixed consumer basket, calculated using Rosstat data. Based on these data, a ranking was compiled in which regions were ranked by the ratio of wages to the cost of the basket of goods and services.

The leader of the ranking was the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, where the median wage allows one to purchase 5.1 fixed consumer baskets. Second place went to the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug with a figure of 4.3, and third to the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (4.0).

In the Nizhny Novgorod region the net median wage exceeds the cost of the fixed basket by 2.4 times. The net median wage (for the second quarter of the current year after deducting personal income tax) in this region reached 56,958 rubles per month. These figures placed the region 35th in the ranking.

At the bottom of the list were Kalmykia, Crimea, Sevastopol, Altai Krai, Ivanovo Region, Stavropol Krai, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia–Alania, Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, Chechnya and Ingushetia. In all of these regions the median wage does not exceed twice the cost of the fixed basket.

On average across the country the median wage is enough for 2.6 such baskets. In 24 of the 85 regions the ratio was at or above the national average.

The highest median wage was recorded in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug — over 171,000 rubles per month. Next were the Yamalo-Nenets AO (140.6 thousand rubles), Magadan Region (128.2 thousand), Nenets AO (116.9 thousand) and Moscow (109.9 thousand).

The lowest median wages in the second quarter of 2025 were recorded in Dagestan, Ingushetia and Chechnya — less than 35,000 rubles per month, which is about 50% of the national level. Low values were also recorded in Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia and North Ossetia–Alania, where the median wage does not exceed 40,000 rubles. Overall, in 21 regions of the country this indicator was below 50,000 rubles.
