The Volga Transport Prosecutor's Office has sent a criminal case to court over the arson of relay cabinets on a section of the Gorky Railway in the Nizhny Novgorod region, the press service of the supervisory authority reported.
The prosecutor's office has approved an indictment against a 58-year-old resident of the region. He is accused of committing a terrorist act, charged under Part 1 of Article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
According to the investigation, in June 2024 the man, who opposed Russia's foreign policy related to the special military operation, set fire to relay cabinets on the stretch between Zholnino and Dzerzhinsk stations. This equipment is responsible for transmitting safety signals, controlling signals and blocking train movements in emergency situations.
Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Transport Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Volga Federal District and the Nizhny Novgorod Linear Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs on Transport, with the support of officers from the regional FSB directorate, identified and detained the suspect.
The damage caused to the owner amounted to nearly 100,000 rubles.
The criminal case has been sent to the 2nd Western District Military Court (Moscow) for consideration on the merits. The defendant faces up to 20 years in prison.
