More than 4,000 people were located by police officers in the Nizhny Novgorod Region within 10 days of a missing-person report being filed, Major of Police Alexey Butusov, head of Unit No. 8 of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region, said at a briefing.

Over the first eight months of 2025, the region’s internal affairs bodies conducted searches for 1,238 persons classified as suspects, accused, defendants and convicts who had absconded from the inquiry authorities, preliminary investigation and the court. Of that number, 478 people were found.

Also during the period the fate and whereabouts of 810 missing citizens were being determined. As a result, 132 were found. The whereabouts of 678 persons have not yet been established; operational-search measures continue in their cases.

In addition, the whereabouts of 4,170 citizens were established within 10 days from the filing of a report with the police department.

According to Major Butusov, cases of people getting lost are recorded weekly in the region’s forested areas. Since the start of the berry-and-mushroom season the police have received more than 100 reports of people lost in the forest. Police officers, emergency rescue services, the Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM), volunteers and volunteer search teams took part in the search operations.

The major urged citizens to remember basic safety rules when visiting forests to avoid such incidents.

Earlier, Nizhny Novgorod residents were reminded what to do if they get lost in the forest. A representative of the PSO "Volunteer" also dispelled the myth of the three-day rule.
