Surgery: there was such a case.

For the second year running, the Dzerzhinsk Emergency Hospital (BSMP) has had the honor of hosting surgeons from across the region. The occasion for the visit by specialists in this field was an offsite meeting of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Russian Society of Surgeons (ROKh), “Surgery: There Was Such a Case.”

“The cream of Nizhny Novgorod surgery has gathered here,” said Gleb Andreev, First Deputy Head of the city of Dzerzhinsk, opening the meeting. “We are proud that an event whose level and significance are hard to overestimate is being held at our Emergency Hospital.”

Gleb Igorevich assured that the city leadership stands ready to support the medical institution and presented a letter of appreciation to Chief Physician Mikhail Gutkin—for his large contribution to the development of modern surgery. He singled out the fact that, in addition to providing care to Dzerzhinsk residents, the hospital’s doctors are rehabilitating participants of the special military operation after their injuries.

The meeting opened with a presentation by the host side. So, the BSMP is a hospital that provides round‑the‑clock emergency care to patients with surgical, trauma, urological, gynecological and therapeutic profiles. The inpatient capacity is 350 beds. A multidisciplinary on‑duty team is on call daily, consisting of four surgeons, two trauma surgeons, a urologist, a gynecologist, a cardiologist, a therapist, a pediatric surgeon and two anesthesiologist‑intensivists. The laboratory operates 24/7. The BSMP has two departments unique outside of Nizhny Novgorod—the pediatric surgery unit and the hematology department.

Last year, 62,000 patients contacted the hospital’s emergency department. Nearly 9,000 operations were performed. The BSMP team comprises 700 employees, including 100 physicians and more than 300 mid‑level medical personnel.

Among the latest landmark events, the hospital’s leadership noted the opening of a new operating complex with nine operating rooms and the modernization of the intensive care and resuscitation department, increased to 24 beds. In the near future, the Dzerzhinsk Samarin War Veterans’ Hospital will be merged with the BSMP, where the rehabilitation department deserves special attention.

Recall that the driving force behind the conference “Surgery: There Was Such a Case” is Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Hospital Surgery named after B.A. Korolev at PIMU, Alexei Mukhin. Also serving as chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the ROKh, Alexei Stanislavovich spoke about the organization’s activities and announced upcoming interesting events in medical life.

The conference brought together more than 150 specialists from 13 medical institutions. In the first part, surgeons practicing in district hospitals spoke; in the second, those working in Nizhny Novgorod. Dzerzhinsk was represented by BSMP physicians—head of the operating unit Mikhail Mikita and surgeon, Candidate of Medical Sciences Sergei Gavrilov.

“A surgeon’s work is not only hard, it is also routine,” addressed the meeting participants Nikolai Razumovsky, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Hospital Surgery named after B.A. Korolev at PIMU, and Deputy Chief Physician for Surgical Care at Hospital No. 40 in Nizhny Novgorod. “Therefore it is very important to stop in time, think through what has been done, and chart new paths. Without this development on your part as surgeons there will be no progress. That is what we will be doing today.”

Speakers shared interesting cases from their practice. Listeners recalled their own experience, asked questions and debated. According to participants, this practical focus was the main value of the conference.

“Last year I gave a presentation here; this time I am attending as a listener. I hope to be here next year as well, and I will recommend it to all colleagues. I was born and raised in Dzerzhinsk: coming here is a double pleasure for me. I see my residents, I meet colleagues. There is a very friendly atmosphere. Believe me, for us surgeons it is very important to discuss common problems, share experience and learn what others are dealing with. I don’t mean to offend anyone, but at most capital city conferences the main topics are high technology and high ‘flight’—that is, things that surgeons in the periphery rarely work with. The conference held at the BSMP, however, is close to our realities. It presents not scientific studies with tables and statistical data, but real clinical cases. And it is precisely the practical nature of this conference that is very useful and interesting,” summed up Leonid Otdelnov, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Hospital Surgery named after B.A. Korolev at PIMU, Secretary of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the ROKh.

      Surgeons speak

      Mikhail Mikita:

“It was a great honor for me to open the conference. I am glad that my report provoked such a lively discussion among colleagues. Especially the story about an 83‑year‑old patient who had combined pathology. We took a risk and successfully performed several types of operations on him at the same time. I regularly take part in similar conferences to raise the level of my competencies. Plus, it’s very interesting to learn what colleagues from other clinics are doing. And the fact that an offsite meeting of surgeons has been held at the BSMP for the second year running undoubtedly gives our institution even more prestige.”

      Sergei Gavrilov:

“Surgery is not a conveyor belt. Every operation, even the most routine, is unique. I am convinced that research activity is naturally linked to a doctor’s work and the search for possibilities of cure. Almost ten years ago I defended my Candidate dissertation. Several times a year I take part in various conferences. Previously, regional surgical conferences were held outside Nizhny Novgorod only in Arzamas. Now—at the BSMP. That means it stands out for its brightness, significance and development. I can proudly say that our hospital is a forge not only of excellent doctors but also of scientists. It is precisely because the hospital works intensively and at a high level that our doctors produce scientific work.”
