On 17 September in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast the school stage of the All‑Russian Olympiad of Schoolchildren (VSOSh) for students in grades 4–11 of general education institutions began. The first subject on the competition schedule was French. In total, more than 700 people in the region completed the Olympiad tasks in French.

The regional operators of the All‑Russian Olympiad of Schoolchildren are traditionally the Ministry of Education and Science of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, the Vega Talent Development Center and the education departments within municipal administrations.

“The school stage of the All‑Russian Olympiad of Schoolchildren is the first and most important step for all the children. Their success in it determines their olympiad trajectory throughout the school year. This year we expect an increase in the number of participants in many VSOSh subjects. As usual, we organize students’ preparation both in person and online. Throughout the summer children could receive consultations from specialists on solving olympiad problems. I am confident this will help Nizhny Novgorod residents perform with dignity,” said Mikhail Puchkov, Minister of Education and Science of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.

Today at Secondary School No. 22 with enhanced French instruction in Dzerzhinsk, 160 students sat the Olympiad. According to the school administration, more and more pupils take part in the VSOSh in French each year. The students undergo thorough preparation for the competition.

“Last year I became a prize‑winner at the final stage of the VSOSh in French; this year my goal is to improve my knowledge of the subject and achieve a better result in the Olympiad,” shared 11th‑grade student Anna Kuznetsova.

The school stage of the VSOSh is held in the region in three formats: online — on the Sirius Educational Center platform, on the regional platform: https://vsosh.vega52.ru, and also in person — in schools.

As the regional Ministry of Education reported, the online format has proven to be a successful tool for attracting new participants. Thus, by the end of the last academic year the number of online VSOSh participants increased by almost 30%.

This week the region will also hold school stages of the VSOSh in other subjects, for example Art (World Art Culture, MHK), as well as in Chinese, Spanish and Italian. The full schedule of the school stage of the VSOSh can be found on the page: https://vk.com/wall-189757422_20061.

Recall that a victory or a prize place at the final stage of the All‑Russian Olympiad of Schoolchildren grants participants the right to enter specialized universities in Russia without entrance exams on a priority basis. The benefit is valid for four years and can be used only once.

In addition, VSOSh participation results can provide up to 10 additional Unified State Exam (USE) points as an individual achievement. Their number can vary from 1 to 10 depending on the specific university and the level of the student’s achievement. The criteria for awarding additional points are set independently by each university. Also, winners, prize‑winners and participants of the final stage of the VSOSh receive a named scholarship from the government of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.

Active involvement of schoolchildren in the olympiad movement helps achieve the goals and objectives of the national project “Youth and Children.”

The new national project has been implemented on the instructions of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin since 2025. It includes nine federal projects and programs: “Russia — Land of Opportunities,” “We Are Together,” “Russia in the World,” “All the Best for Children,” “Leading Schools,” “Teachers and Mentors,” “Creating a Network of Modern Campuses,” “Universities for a Generation of Leaders,” and “Professionalitet.”
