      In Nizhny Novgorod on September 17 the unveiling of a large-scale graffiti dedicated to Hero of the Soviet Union Nikolay Filchenkov took place. The art object appeared on the street that bears his name.

      The project was initiated by the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the "Volunteers of Victory" movement with the support of the regional government.

      The ceremony was attended by Yuliya Siprova, deputy head of the Kanavinsky District, representatives of "Volunteers of Victory", members of "Yunarmiya" and schoolchildren.

      Nikolay Filchenkov was born in the village of Kurilovo in the Nizhny Novgorod region. In November 1941, during the defense of Sevastopol, a group of sailors under his command engaged in battle with 22 German tanks. The fighters knocked out 10 tanks but, having run out of ammunition, stopped the enemy's advance at the cost of their lives. Filchenkov was the first to throw himself onto a tank with a bundle of grenades, setting an example for his comrades.

      For this feat, on October 23, 1942, Nikolay Filchenkov was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. His memory is immortalized in Sevastopol, where a street and a large landing ship are named after him. He is permanently entered in the rolls of his military unit.

      In Nizhny Novgorod the hero's name is borne by a street and a square in the Kanavinsky District, next to which a bust of Filchenkov has been installed. Now a new graffiti has been added to them, becoming part of the urban environment.

      "The history of great Russia was created by great people. And our youth must know their names. As part of the 'Image of Victory' project we revive the memory of heroes whose lives became a symbol of service to the Motherland, and we try to speak to young people in a language they understand. We also plan to create a map of 329 patriotic sites in the region so that residents and guests can find them online or visit them in person," said Maria Samodelkina, head of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of "Volunteers of Victory".
