Economy The "A Just Russia" faction has submitted a bill to the State Duma to introduce a windfall profits tax on credit institutions, reports the 360 TV channel. The initiative is aimed at replenishing the budget at the expense of large banks whose profits have grown significantly in recent years.
According to the proposal, banks will pay a tax of 10% on windfall profits. Faction leader Sergey Mironov noted that this would increase the treasury's revenues by hundreds of billions of rubles.
He noted that Russian banks' net profit for 2023 amounted to 3.3 trillion rubles, 16 times the figure for the previous year. In 2024 banks posted even more impressive results, and experts expect that by the end of the current year their earnings will exceed all expectations.
The faction is not proposing this for the first time. Mironov emphasized that, given the budget deficit projected for 2026, it is necessary to find new sources of funding for social programs and economic development. He believes that banks that earn significant profits thanks to the high key rate should make a larger contribution to the country's budget. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
