The Moscow District Court of Nizhny Novgorod has decided to extend the detention of the former rector of the Nizhny Novgorod State Agricultural Technical University (NGATU), Igor Vorotnikov. This was reported to NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" by the regional court’s press service.
It is recalled that the former head of the university was detained on January 14 at his workplace. According to the investigation, he was involved in organizing a scheme of fictitious enrollment of foreign citizens into state-funded places at the university — migrants were registered as students without taking the mandatory exams in the Russian language, history and the fundamentals of the legislation of the Russian Federation. They did not attend classes but officially obtained the right to work in the region.
The investigation believes that Vorotnikov, in turn, benefited from the fictitious enrollments through improved performance indicators for the educational institution and additional bonuses.
His actions are seen as containing elements of crimes provided for by two articles of the Criminal Code: "abuse of official powers" and "organization of illegal migration."
Earlier it was reported that another former rector — the former head of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of RANEPA, Alexander Paramonov — had his measure of restraint eased by the court and was placed under house arrest.
