Nizhny Novgorod residents were warned about overnight frosts on September 16–17.

      Due to expected night and morning frosts in the Nizhny Novgorod region on 16 and 17 September, emergencies may occur. This is warned by the Main Directorate of Russia’s EMERCOM for the region.

      The agency notes that, according to the Upper Volga Department of the Hydrometeorological Service, air temperatures in some places may fall to 0 to -1 degrees Celsius. And surface soil temperatures may drop to -3 degrees Celsius.

      Such weather conditions can lead to emergencies. The risks are associated both with damage or loss of agricultural crops and with an increase in the number of fires. Causes may include increased loads on power grids, as well as malfunctions in stove, gas and electrical equipment.

      Rescuers recommend that residents observe safety measures. Do not use homemade or faulty electrical appliances, and do not leave heaters and stoves left burning unattended.

      To protect plants, specialists advise covering them with polymer film, spunbond fabric or straw. Effective measures also include smudging (smoke treatment) and watering the soil, which helps retain heat at the ground surface.

      Earlier it was reported that in the Nizhny Novgorod region it has been proposed to bring forward the start dates for heating in residential buildings and social institutions.
