SocietyFrom 15 September 2025, the moose hunting season opens in the Nizhny Novgorod region and will run until 10 January 2026, the regional Ministry of Forestry reported.
The moose is a valuable game resource, the harvest of which is regulated by limits and quotas. In publicly accessible hunting grounds, permits are allocated by lottery; 71 permits were issued this season. Hunting is permitted for all sex and age groups of moose.
The moose population in the region is growing, so limits and quotas for the 2025–2026 hunting season have been increased by 178 animals. This decision was made taking into account the positive population dynamics.
The Ministry of Forestry is actively combating illegal hunting by deploying inspectors and hunters employed by the ministry.
Criminal liability and compensation for damage ranging from 90,000 to 400,000 rubles are provided for illegal killing of a moose.
During the breeding season moose can be aggressive. The Ministry of Forestry warns not to approach them closely and to report any encounters within populated areas to emergency services at 112.
