Hockey Club Torpedo-Gorky claimed its first victory of the season.

      Torpedo-Gorky hockey players secured a long-awaited victory after a poor start to the season. The Russian champions beat Penza's Diesel in a shootout, 3-2.

      The start of the game was difficult for the Nizhny Novgorod side. By the middle of the first period the visitors were leading 2-0.

      But the hosts did not give up. The Gorky players stepped up their speed and pressure, and soon Kirill Svishtyov joined the attack and cut the deficit — 1-2.

      In the second period the Nizhny Novgorod team completely seized the initiative, but they could not equalize.

      The decider came in the closing stages of the third period. With two and a half minutes left on the clock Torpedo-Gorky's coaching staff pulled the goalie and sent out a sixth skater. After the face-off Kirill Svishtyov shot from a sharp angle and found the net — 2-2.

      Overtime passed without goals, and everything was decided in the shootout. Ilya Chefanov converted the winning attempt, giving Torpedo-Gorky their first win of the season. For head coach Dmitry Kosmachev this is his first victory as a head coach in the VHL.

      The next match for the Nizhny Novgorod side will be at home on 13 September. The opponent will be Saratov's Kristall.
