Society — On the night of September 10 a strong geomagnetic storm struck Earth, which proved unexpected for specialists. This was reported by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAN), the TV channel "360" reports.
According to scientists, this event is difficult to explain from a scientific point of view. Although forecasts compiled the day before did not predict such events and showed optimistic green levels, reality turned out otherwise.
The causes of the storm remain unclear. Charts tracking the movement of the solar wind did not record the approach of plasma clouds that usually cause geomagnetic disturbances.
The only possible explanation offered by IKI RAN specialists is the formation of an unusually large substorm. In this phenomenon, the magnetosphere’s energy is released by internal processes, without the influence of external factors.
