Rare head tumor removed from 87-year-old Nizhny Novgorod woman — photo

      Doctors of the N.A. Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital successfully performed surgery to remove a rare benign tumor from an elderly woman.

      According to Alexey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of MIA "Stacionar-press," the 87-year-old patient sought medical help only after the lesion on her crown began to bleed. Before that, the tumor had been developing for more than six years.

      Specialists diagnosed a pilomatrixoma — a rare neoplasm that forms from the hair matrix. Although the tumor is considered benign, there is a risk of its malignant transformation.

      During the operation, surgeons had to remove a significant area of the scalp to completely extract the tumor. The resulting defect was closed with transplanted skin flaps.

      Medical staff note that the postoperative period passed without complications. The patient was successfully discharged home.

      The complex surgical procedure was performed by neurosurgeon Darya Bokareva and surgeon Natalya Koroleva. Anesthetic support was provided by Andrey Rybkin and Lyudmila Chameeva; nurse Irina Abdurashitova also worked in the operating room.

      Earlier it was reported that in Dzerzhinsk medics saved a 40-year-old man with testicular cancer.
