Society. Employees of the Nizhny Novgorod zoo "Limpopo" became foster parents for a newborn European bison calf that its biological mother refused to nurse. This was reported by the zoo's press service.
As the zoo's general director Vladimir Gerasichkin said, this was Marta's first birth. It went smoothly and without veterinary intervention. However, stress and inexperience prevented the mother from fully exhibiting maternal instinct.
"After the baby was born she, as she should, accepted him and licked him, but difficulties arose with nursing," Gerasichkin noted.
Now the zoo staff have taken over care of the calf. He is fed every two hours, and Marta is temporarily isolated from the baby.
The European bison calf, which turned out to be a boy, was born weighing 26 kg. He is now feeling well, is active, shows interest in his surroundings and happily drinks milk from a bottle.
Earlier it was reported that residents of Nizhny Novgorod chose a name for a baby aardvark. The little girl was named Hiba.
