A modern educational complex — School No. 189, designed for 1,600 students — has begun operating in Nizhny Novgorod. Classes at the new institution started on September 1, 2025. Construction was carried out within the framework of the national project "Education," which was succeeded by the national project "Youth and Children." The project was implemented under a concession agreement between the government of Nizhny Novgorod Region and the Regional Development Corporation.

The features of the new school were reviewed by the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region Gleb Nikitin, his deputy Andrey Checherin, the region’s Minister of Education and Science Mikhail Puchkov, the chairman of the City Duma Evgeny Chintsov, and the CEO of the Regional Development Corporation Igor Ishchenko. The guests were given a tour by the school’s director, Irina Dovgal.

According to her, the school building consists of six blocks of varying heights, with a total area approaching 30,000 square meters. Class sizes are limited to no more than 25 students, which helps create a comfortable educational environment for both children and teachers. The guests inspected the assembly hall, primary school classrooms, chemistry, physics and astronomy laboratories, as well as a specialized unit for children with autism spectrum disorders.

Meals are organized in two dining halls — for 312 and 500 seats. This allows for separating the flows of primary and secondary school students, ensuring convenience and safety. The food unit is equipped with modern equipment that meets the latest sanitary and technological standards.

Great attention has been paid to the physical development of students. The school has several sports halls, a ski base, as well as outdoor sports and play areas.

Gleb Nikitin emphasized that the school in the Zenit residential complex has become an important social infrastructure facility not only for the Sovetsky district but for the entire city. In his words, with the active settlement of the new residential area, the appearance of such a school solves an important task — providing access to quality education for young families. More than three billion rubles were allocated to implement the project. Currently, about 1,250 children attend the school, including more than 150 first-graders. Full capacity is planned to be reached in the coming years.

The Mayor of Nizhny Novgorod, Yuri Shalabaev, noted that School No. 189 is the largest municipal educational institution in the city. He stressed that the facility is equipped to the most modern standards, which will give children the opportunity to realize their potential and receive quality education. Special attention, he said, has been paid to inclusive education — autonomous classrooms and a navigation system for children with special needs have been provided.

Igor Ishchenko, CEO of the Regional Development Corporation, recalled that this is already the 11th school built in the region under the concession model. He noted that all the details necessary to create a comfortable educational environment were taken into account during the project’s implementation. Construction was carried out under constant monitoring to ensure high quality of work.

The national project "Youth and Children," within the framework of which this project was implemented, was launched in 2025 at the instruction of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. It comprises nine federal programs aimed at developing the education system and supporting youth, including "Russia — Land of Opportunities," "Leading Schools," "Teachers and Mentors," "Professionalitet," and others.

It was previously reported that introducing a single uniform in Nizhny Novgorod schools is not planned for now.
