A supercell thunderstorm caused a tropical downpour in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.

       SocietyA thunderstorm supercell was recorded in the Nizhny Novgorod region in August, said Mikhail Lyubov, associate professor at the Arzamas branch of Nizhny Novgorod State University and a phenologist.

      According to the expert, August was overall abnormally wet. With a monthly norm of 57 mm, the region recorded almost 180 mm of precipitation. That is more than three times the long-term average.

      An especially heavy downpour hit Arzamas on August 2. Over the course of two hours more than 100 mm of precipitation fell, including large hail. The cause was a rare atmospheric phenomenon — a thunderstorm supercell. It is a massive storm cloud about 30 kilometers in diameter, within which powerful updrafts form.

      The month's average temperature was about +17 degrees Celsius, which is generally in line with the climatic norm. However, while early August saw anomalous heat, with temperatures rising to +30°C, the second half of the month was noticeably cooler, with nighttime temperatures dropping below +10°C. At the end of the month there was a shortage of sunlight. Only August 16 and 31 were mostly clear; on the other days the sky remained covered with clouds of various types — from cumulonimbus to stratocumulus.

      Mikhail Lyubov noted that this change in weather from mid-month was due to the influence on the central part of European Russia of a North Atlantic cyclone, which brought cold air masses from the Barents Sea. It persisted almost until the end of the month, yielding only on August 28 to an Azores anticyclone.

      It was earlier reported that over 65 mm of precipitation fell in Nizhny Novgorod on August 23–24.
