The idea of teaching school-age children to use artificial intelligence competently and ethically was supported by 71% of Russians, according to a survey* conducted by VTB. According to respondents, the use of AI in the educational process helps develop modern competencies among schoolchildren: digital literacy, the ability to analyze and synthesize information, as well as qualities such as accountability for results and critical thinking.
Only 6% of respondents believe that schoolchildren can learn to interact with artificial intelligence on their own, but there is no consensus on how training in working with AI should be conducted in schools. More than a third of respondents (34%) believe that the subject should be integrated into existing courses, a quarter (24%) support the introduction of a separate discipline, and another 22% favored the format of optional extracurricular classes.
Russians consider the automation of teachers' routine tasks to be the most promising use of artificial intelligence in schools — this option was noted by 42% of respondents. Among other uses: helping students find information (41%), creating interactive lessons and educational games (40%). 36% of respondents supported the possibility of using AI to analyze students' academic performance, 34% — in the role of a “digital tutor,” and 33% — for checking homework and tests. 16% of study participants believe that AI is better not used in the school system.
Almost half of Russians (46%) have a positive attitude toward the use of artificial intelligence when students do homework. 22% are convinced that the use of AI can hinder the development of skills and independence, while 23% believe that it all depends on the approach to its use.
Most respondents emphasize the importance not only of the training itself but also of fostering a culture of responsible technology use. 83% of Russians consider it important that schools explain to children the rules for the safe handling of artificial intelligence and the protection of personal data.
“Our survey showed that AI is perceived by society as a practical tool, including in the field of education. It can relieve teachers of part of the routine workload, help children with their studies and make lessons more engaging. Users expect that, along with new opportunities, a culture of responsible AI use will develop. Technology development should proceed in such a way as to bring real benefits and meet public demands in the area of safety,” said Maxim Konovalikhin, Senior Vice President of VTB, Head of the Data Analysis and Modeling Department.
*The all-Russian VTB survey was conducted in August 2025. It included 1.5 thousand respondents aged 18 to 65 in cities with populations of 100,000 and above.
