The Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Gleb Nikitin, visited the town of Plyos in Ivanovo Oblast, where themed weekend events dedicated to Khokhloma painting took place. The event, organized by the "Khokhloma" brand, attracted many guests and demonstrated strong interest in traditional Russian art in a contemporary form.

A festival (0+) in the Russian style was held on August 30 and 31 at the "Khokhloma" store-workshop, which opened in Plyos this summer. As part of the program, guests learned about the history of Nizhny Novgorod tea culture and viewed rare historical items of folk craft. Anyone could take part in master classes led by women artists from the "Khokhloma Painting" factory and create their own piece with a traditional pattern.

The head of the region noted the importance of such initiatives for preserving folk artistic traditions, especially in a colorful historical and cultural place like Plyos. He spoke with the women artists of the "Khokhloma Painting" factory and viewed unique collections at the "Khokhloma" store-workshop.

According to Nikitin, it is especially symbolic that Khokhloma painting, born on the Volga lands, finds a vibrant response here.

"Projects like these, where history organically intertwines with modern design, not only preserve our heritage but also make it relevant to the younger generation and set new cultural trends," Gleb Nikitin said.

Timurbulat Karimov, Chairman of the Council of the Plyos Urban Settlement, noted that Plyos has a special cultural code closely linked to Russian crafts and painting. He expressed his pleasure at the emergence in the town of a space devoted to Khokhloma and stressed that preserving cultural heritage does not preclude openness to the new. In his view, Russian art and design have a great future.

Sergey Yakovlev, Minister of Tourism and Crafts of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, added that folk arts and crafts are a living art that unites people and regions. He noted that the new space combines traditional forms of Khokhloma painting — wooden tableware and utensils — with modern directions: clothing, textiles, porcelain, furniture, jewelry and accessories.

The ministry reminded that tourism development is among the objectives of the national project "Tourism and Hospitality," which has been implemented in Russia since 2025 at the initiative of President Vladimir Putin. The project is aimed at developing infrastructure, manufacturing equipment, training personnel, promoting travel around the country and ensuring a high level of service and safety.

It was previously reported that Nizhny Novgorod's folk crafts were recognized as the best in Russia.
