Nizhny Novgorod Region launches a scientific tourist route to Sarov.

      A new popular science route for schoolchildren, students and young professionals has appeared in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The project called "Rosatom. Nuclear Technologies and Atomic Energy" (6+) was developed as part of the Decade of Science and Technology and is timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Russia's atomic industry, the regional government press service reported.

      The route allows participants to get acquainted with the key achievements of the atomic sector, learn about the application of nuclear technologies in civilian and defense spheres, and try their hand as researchers and engineers.

      The route's center is the Sarov technopark — an open innovation site located within the closed city of Sarov. It houses the leading educational, scientific and production organizations of the sector. Participants will be able to speak with scientists and engineers, visit laboratories, take part in lectures, master classes and scientific sessions, and also see the process of manufacturing components for nuclear power.

      Deputy Chair of the Government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region and Candidate of Technical Sciences Ekaterina Solntseva emphasized that nuclear technologies are an example of advanced intellectual work, the results of which find application in medicine, energy, security and other fields.

      "Our tours are an opportunity to immerse yourself in a real scientific environment, try your hand in laboratories and in production. This helps young people understand what they are truly interested in and make a conscious career choice. And that means — ahead of them are new discoveries, knowledge and professional challenges," she said.

      The route program includes visits to Rosatom enterprises, the laboratories of the Moscow State University branch in Sarov and the Museum of the Atomic Industry. Participants will be offered interactive lectures, quizzes, engineering team projects and work with professional equipment.

      Among the lecturers are specialists from the National Center for Physics and Mathematics, as well as graduate students researching theoretical physics, cosmology, black holes, atomic weapons and nuclear energy. In addition, meetings with MSU students in Sarov will be held.

      Director of the Sarov technopark Alexey Solovyov noted that modern science requires an open dialogue, especially with young people who are facing a choice of profession. According to him, the route allows participants to see how scientific theories become real technologies in energy, medicine and defense.

      "This is not just a tour, but involvement in a living scientific process. We want young people to feel the scale of the tasks and understand the role they can play in the future of the atomic sector," he added.

      Additionally, participants are offered themed excursions: to the technopark's animation studio, to a cheesemaking facility with tasting, and to the Holy Trinity Seraphim-Diveyevo Monastery — one of the country's main spiritual centers.

      The project provides two participation formats: one-day tours and weekend tours with accommodation in the technopark hotel. The program is designed for young people aged 14 and over, with up to 30 people per group.

      The initiative is being implemented with the support of the Government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region and is aimed at developing science-educational tourism, as well as attracting young people to engineering and technical professions.

      The creation of such routes is part of the national project "Tourism and Hospitality," implemented by order of the President of Russia. Nine science tours are already operating in the region, including routes in medicine, mechanical engineering and additive technologies. Four more are in development. In May 2025 the region's experience was presented to Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.

      Recall that the 80th anniversary of the atomic industry was solemnly celebrated in Nizhny Novgorod on 20 August. On 22 August President Vladimir Putin visited Sarov, spoke with employees of enterprises in the atomic sector and with Governor Gleb Nikitin, and laid flowers at the monument to Academician Yuly Khariton — the chief designer of the first Soviet atomic bomb.
