      More than five thousand people took part in the national cultures festival "Friendly Nizhny", which was held for the first time in the renovated 1 May Park on City Day. This was reported by the Department of Social Communications and Youth Policy of the Nizhny Novgorod administration. Earlier, the city’s head Yuri Shalabaev said that the holiday would be dedicated to the main theme — "Heroes Among Us."

      The festival brought together people of different ages and nationalities. It is intended to emphasize the multicultural character of Nizhny Novgorod and to acquaint guests with the country’s cultural diversity. Woven throughout the festival’s program is Russian culture, which unites all the peoples of Russia. Creative groups from national-cultural organizations and autonomies of Nizhny Novgorod traditionally take part in the event.

      "Kanavinsky District is the most multinational in our city. It is symbolic that the event dedicated to friendship and our unity is held here. After all, the main thing in this holiday is the people who have lived and live in Nizhny Novgorod, who raise their children and achieve impressive results in their professions. These are the people who determine the history of Nizhny. It is no coincidence that this year City Day is dedicated to the heroes who live among us: veterans, those who are now fighting in the special military operation, and people who perform worthy deeds every day in ordinary, peaceful life. For many, this festival is a symbol of our unity despite external threats and ill-wishers. We are strong in our friendship, mutual support, belief in ourselves and our country," said Vladimir Anisimov, deputy head of the Nizhny Novgorod administration, a participant in the special military operation and the "Time of Heroes" program.

      Artur Shtoyan, director of the Department of Social Communications and Youth Policy, added that the festival took place at a new location for the first time and gathered a record number of guests. "The good tradition of holding it annually arose several years ago at a meeting of the Interethnic Relations Commission with the support of the city head Yuri Shalabaev. The renovated 1 May Park welcomed us very warmly. This year we managed to recreate the atmosphere of the old Russian town. We brought everyone together at a common table with traditional Russian tea, introduced visitors to Nizhny Novgorod crafts, and together decorated a symbolic Tree of Friendship. A Russian birch tree adorned with national patterns of the peoples of Russia became a real photo spot for everyone. Throughout the day, anyone could color the ornaments they liked, among which Khokhloma and Gorodets painting held a central place. We managed to show how Russian culture unites all peoples around common spiritual and moral values and orientations," said Artur Shtoyan.

      "We waited a very long time for the park to open and are very glad that we can be present at such a celebration. Here they tell children not only about Russian culture but also about other nationalities. It’s great!" said park visitor Olga.

      "Today we are passing through Nizhny Novgorod, and we really like it here. Noisy, fun! My daughter took part in a block-printing master class, then tried pottery and made a small vase. We really liked the folk dances. The children are impressed," said festival participant Klavdiya Schmidt.

      "We continued the original Nizhny Novgorod tradition as a city that brings all neighbors together — near and far — at one big table. Our Russian culture is represented by traditional master classes: historical weaving on a vertical loom, hand molding from red clay, matryoshka dolls, Gorodets painting, Khokhloma. But the main Nizhny tradition is, of course, doing everything together," said art historian, producer, and project manager of the "Volga Standard" community Maria Bogdanova.

      Earlier, city head Yuri Shalabaev congratulated Nizhny Novgorod residents on City Day. "For me, Nizhny Novgorod is home, the place where my family has lived all their lives, a city I always want to return to if I leave somewhere. Nizhny Novgorod is a city you want to live in, a city where you feel life! Friends, be happy, study, work, implement what you have planned in Nizhny Novgorod. I wish you success in everything.
