The Nizhny Novgorod Region was able to halve the outflow of patients traveling outside the region for high-tech medical care, MIA "Stacionar-press" editor-in-chief Alexey Nikonov reported.

Along with the reduction in the number of people leaving, the financial flow stabilized: funds that previously went to other regions remained within the Nizhny Novgorod Region's healthcare system. This directly affects doctors' salaries and the funding of hospitals. Previously, many residents of the region preferred to have ophthalmology and traumatology surgeries in Moscow, St. Petersburg, as well as in the Kirov and Vladimir regions.

According to data obtained by "Stacionar-press," in 2023 about 3,400 cataract replacement operations were lost due to patients leaving the region. This cost the region 180 million rubles. By 2024 the number of such operations had fallen to 1,013, and by June 2025 — to 298.

A similar trend has been observed in traumatology. If losses amounted to 280 million rubles in 2023, they were 175 million rubles in 2024, and by mid-2025 — only 52 million rubles. Most joint replacement operations and other complex procedures are now performed in Nizhny Novgorod.

The reasons for the outflow are not always related to lack of access to treatment. Often it was competition between regions, and sometimes attempts to undermine confidence in Nizhny Novgorod's medical care.

The Ministry of Health and the Territorial Compulsory Health Insurance Fund (TFOMS) of the Nizhny Novgorod Region have been monitoring the situation for several years and taking measures. In particular, ophthalmological and traumatological care have been concentrated at the N.A. Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital. There, the number of quotas was significantly increased and equipment was upgraded, which made treatment more accessible and improved its quality.

It was previously reported that medical institutions in the Nizhny Novgorod Region will receive 162.2 million rubles in 2025 from TFOMS's regulated insurance reserve.
