      Maria Vedunova, Director of the Institute of Biology and Biomedicine at NNSU, shared photographs of the unusual fungus Hydnellum peckii encountered in an August forest. Alexey Nikonov reported this on his Telegram channel "Bokal presseka."

      The fungus, nicknamed "bleeding" because of the bright red droplets on its cap, feeds not only on moisture but also on insects. It grows on sandy soils and is poisonous: it has a bitter taste and a rubbery consistency.

      It was previously believed that Hydnellum peckii was first discovered in the Nizhny Novgorod region in 2024; however, according to the biologist, the fungus has been found here before. Tourists noted its presence on the "Vishenskoye Bog" eco-trail in the Kerzhensky Nature Reserve.
