One of Russia's oldest factories, "Gidromash", is celebrating its 220th anniversary.

      One of Russia’s oldest enterprises, NAO “Hydromash” named after V.I. Luzyanin, is celebrating an anniversary. This year the Nizhny Novgorod plant turns 220. Congratulations to the “birthday celebrant” were sent by the governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region Gleb Nikitin, the chairman of the regional Legislative Assembly Evgeny Lyulin and the head of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) Vadim Badeha.

      The plant traces its history back to the 19th century: in 1805 a carriage workshop opened in Moscow where horse-drawn carriages were produced. It quickly gained popularity and at one time even proudly bore the Imperial coat of arms on its carriages.

      Over time the enterprise grew into a factory that at first produced automotive products and later began manufacturing landing gear for domestic aircraft. In 1941 the entire production was evacuated to Gorky and during the war it “put on wheels” every sixth aircraft made in the USSR.

      “If you take the years of the Cold War, there was a confrontation: what the Americans were doing, what we were doing. In America there were two landing gear plants, in England and France one landing gear plant each. They produced landing gear for combat aircraft in quantities equal to what we alone produced — that’s a fact,” said Vladimir Luzyanin, Hero of Socialist Labour, laureate of the USSR State Prize, Honored Aircraft Builder of the Russian Federation, who led the enterprise for more than half a century.

      Today “Hydromash” is engaged in the design, production and testing of landing gear, hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic units for all types of aircraft.

      “220 years is an important date. We need not only to preserve but to multiply what has been built up over these two and a little centuries, consistently confirming the title of ‘pioneering plant’ that rightfully belongs to our enterprise for a long time,” emphasized General Director Alexander Luzyanin.

      The plant has dozens of departmental, regional, trade-union and corporate awards for its contribution to domestic aircraft building.

      “Each stage of the plant’s development is a page in the history of domestic engineering, filled with labor, talent and dedication to its work. Today NAO ‘Hydromash’ named after V.I. Luzyanin is a recognized leader in the production of aircraft landing gear,” noted the governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region Gleb Nikitin, congratulating the enterprise on its anniversary.

      Today the plant equips the latest fighters, bombers and modern passenger airliners with its products, including the MC-21, Il-114-300 and others.

      “Today ‘Hydromash’ bears the name of the legendary leader, the patriarch of Nizhny Novgorod industry Vladimir Ilyich Luzyanin. Many learned from him, I also consider myself his student and am proud of a long friendship with this outstanding person,” added the chairman of the Legislative Assembly of Nizhny Novgorod Region Evgeny Lyulin. “Virtually all Russian airplanes and helicopters today are fitted with the plant’s products; the Soviet reusable spacecraft Buran took off and landed on the unique landing gear designed here. In the difficult 1990s your enterprise was one of the few that competed on equal terms with Western manufacturers.”
