Nizhny Novgorod is gradually becoming one of Russia's important cinematic centers. Considering the city's rich history, recognizable architecture, and impressive historical backdrop, it is becoming a highly sought-after location for filming movies and TV series. Many blockbuster films have been shot here — from Soviet classics to new streaming premieres. Experts have compiled the list of the most famous films shot in Nizhny Novgorod.

      "Three Sisters"

The TV series "Three Sisters" (18+), part of the KION line from the MTS ecosystem, was presented this year at the "Gorky Fest" film festival. It was also filmed in Nizhny Novgorod. The plot follows sisters Ira, Olya, and Masha who want to leave Nizhny for Moscow for personal reasons. However, their mother (Larisa Guzeeva) built her jewelry business in the Volga metropolis. The mother does not want to send her daughters to the capital, and indeed — life in Nizhny is far from bleak, contrary to the often gloomy portrayals by serial creators about change.

      "I'm Losing Weight"

The popular comedy "I'm Losing Weight" (18+) was also shot in Nizhny Novgorod in 2018. Sunny cityscapes provided its energetic visual style.

      "Nina"

The series "Nina" (18+), released in 2022 and directed by Zhora Kryzhovnikov, also features an optimistic view of the city. Its creators deliberately chose to depict Nizhny as lively, warm, and full of character rather than gloomy or depressing. Here, Nizhny became a nexus of personal stories, local traditions, and fresh air.

      "FC Rodina"

The hit film "FC Rodina" (18+) from last year was also shot here. Its scenes take place at the Nizhny Novgorod stadium and residential districts of the city. Thanks to the film, viewers got a glimpse of the city’s modern infrastructure and urban dynamics.

      Soviet Cinema Hits

The tradition of filming movies in Nizhny Novgorod dates back to Soviet times. In the 1950s, the drama "Ekaterina Voronina" (6+), starring Soviet cinema superstar Lyudmila Khityaeva, was filmed here. This was followed by "The Light of a Distant Star" (16+), "Not Evening Yet" (12+), "The Life of Klim Samgin" (0+), and "The End of Operation 'Resident'" (12+). In all these films, the streets of Gorky (the city’s name in Soviet times) became full-fledged characters. It’s no coincidence — unique locations have been preserved in Nizhny Novgorod. One can see old merchant houses, Soviet industrial architecture, backyards of the old city center, and vibrant suburban districts.

      Mikhalkov and Imperial Russia

In the 1990s, Nikita Mikhalkov turned to these locations. In 1994, he chose Zelyony Gorodok near Nizhny for the filming of the drama "Burnt by the Sun" (18+), which received both an Oscar and the Cannes Grand Prix. Scenes for "Siberian Barber" (1998) were shot at Blagoveshchensk Square and near the Prisutstvenny Place, where the historic architecture conveys the atmosphere of late 19th-century Imperial Russia.

      Balabanov and "Zhmurki"

In the 1990s, Aleksei Balabanov focused on Nizhny Novgorod. One of his most famous films, "Zhmurki" (18+), was shot there. The absurd scenes of the crime comedy unfold against the backdrop of Soviet-era high-rises, the Kovalikhinskaya bathhouse, and quiet courtyards. Off-the-beaten-path filming locations of this movie still host unofficial tours.

      Gorky Fest

It is no coincidence that in 2017, Nizhny Novgorod was chosen as the venue for one of Russia's brightest film festivals — "Gorky Fest." Today, it has grown into an international platform. Every July, the festival attracts the country’s most renowned actors and directors, screening over 140 films.
