A new name — a new style: a men's volleyball club from Nizhny Novgorod rebranded.
According to the NGO "Center for Management and Development of Sports in the Nizhny Novgorod Region," the Nizhny Novgorod volleyball team ASK ("Association of Sports Clubs") has received a new name — "Gorky." This name was chosen by the fans themselves through online voting. The result — 59% in favor of the new name for the main men's team. Along with this, "Gorky" received new brand guidelines, a logo, and colors.
The presentation of the new corporate identity took place on August 2 during the first Mayor's Cup of Nizhny Novgorod in beach volleyball. The event united the city’s volleyball community: enthusiasts and professional athletes of world level. Besides volleyball matches, a broad entertainment program was organized for guests: yoga and paddleboarding workshops, activities for children. The main star guest of the Cup was the DJ duo Swanky Tunes.
ASK volleyball club was founded in 2016. In its first season, ASK upgraded its level: winning 38 out of 40 matches in the Higher League "B" and earning the right to compete in the Higher League "A." The following season, the club was promoted to the Super League, where it still plays today. ASK has also competed in the Russian Cup throughout these years.
The main element of the new "Gorky" logo is a flying stormy petrel — a bird representing freedom, strength of spirit, and bravery in Maxim Gorky's "The Song of the Stormy Petrel." At the same time, the bird's outlines resemble the letter "G" — the first in "Gorky" — and a volleyball player in a serve.
The primary color of the brand book is a rich red, symbolizing passion, dynamics, and the strength of competition. Previously, the club used a darker shade; now the palette is fresher and brighter.
Secondary colors include burgundy red, which adds emotionality and strength and is ideal for accents, and light blue, evoking a sense of lightness and space. Additional shades include dark blue, creating background depth and contrast, and light gray tones.
Yuriy Shalabaev, head of Nizhny Novgorod:
"The Mayor’s Beach Volleyball Cup, held for the first time in Nizhny Novgorod, was so well received by experts, fans, and athletes themselves that, after some consultations, I decided to make such competitions an annual event. It is a joint effort with the Center for Management and Development of Sports in the region to develop both professional and amateur sports in Nizhny. Congratulations to everyone who earned medals at the Cup and to those who cheered sincerely for all participants over these two days. Undoubtedly, it’s also very pleasing that during the voting among fans, our volleyball team ASK received a new name — 'Gorky.' I wish our players only success in the new season!"
Maxim Gafurov, General Director of the NGO "Center for Management and Development of Sports in the Nizhny Novgorod Region":
"Beach volleyball is a great and fitting format for Nizhny. I thank the team of the mayor and the Center for Management and Development of Sports for making this big sports celebration happen. We will continue to develop in this direction, promoting volleyball and our sports clubs through such formats, where professional sports go beyond the usual boundaries — this creates a fantastic synergy. The many people who spent their weekend at the Mayor’s Cup and their positive faces confirm that our efforts were successful."
