On August 4, 2025, at 12:17 PM [157], Dzerzhinsk City Hospital surgeons performed a unique operation to remove an abnormally enlarged spleen in a 50-year-old patient. According to Alexey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of MIAS "Stationary Press," this was the first such case in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

The woman suffered from a hematological disease that led to significant splenomegaly. The spleen measured 40 by 25 cm, four times the normal size. Doctors noted that the organ was so enlarged that it could be palpated through the abdominal wall.

During the operation, surgeons saw that the spleen completely filled the abdominal cavity. Despite the complexity of the case, the intervention was successful, and the organ was removed without complications.

The surgery was performed by the head of the operating unit, Mikhail Mikita, assisted by veteran surgeon Valery Bazanov.

Earlier, it was reported that Nizhny Novgorod doctors performed a unique heart "freeze" operation.
