A petition from Nizhny Novgorod residents has appeared on Change.org due to the stench in the city. It has already been signed by about three thousand people.

According to the authors of the appeal, the problem with the pungent odor, reminiscent of hydrogen sulfide and sewage, has persisted in the city for several years, and since spring and summer of this year, the situation has significantly worsened. The unpleasant smell is felt daily, even with windows closed, and is registered in six out of eight districts of the city.

The petition emphasizes that this is not just a temporary inconvenience: the deterioration of air quality affects residents' health.

The residents demand, in particular, the publication of air analysis results, the initiation of continuous public monitoring, a federal inspection of enterprises for illegal emissions, and, if violations are confirmed, the initiation of criminal cases and the obligatory elimination of consequences. They also request that the pollution problem be included in the federal project "Rehabilitation of the Volga" and other measures.

It is worth recalling that city authorities had previously announced the development of a set of measures aimed at reducing and preventing the unpleasant odors in Nizhny Novgorod. As part of these efforts, control over the activities of so-called "black" septic tankers was intensified, and supervision over industrial enterprises connected to the wastewater system was tightened. Additionally, inspections of sewage pumping stations and networks were conducted, resulting in the elimination of local malfunctions.

At the Nizhny Novgorod Aeration Station, a "wet barrier" system was installed to reduce odors and their spread into the air.

Residents’ complaints about persistent unpleasant smells have repeatedly reached the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin. He instructed to provide a report on the progress of the investigation into the criminal case initiated due to possible violations of environmental legislation in the Verkhny Peschyor district.

Meanwhile, the regional Ministry of Ecology reported that round-the-clock air quality monitoring has been organized in the city due to numerous residents' appeals.
