Science Associate Professor of Minin University, Candidate of Biological Sciences Tatiana Mayasova shared the results of modern research in the field of neurobiology of sex differences. The lecture was part of the "Beacon of Scientific Discoveries" project, implemented with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science as part of the Decade of Science and Technology.

According to Mayasova, scientific data confirm that the brains of men and women differ not only in structure but also in functional organization. Such differences are formed during prenatal development under the influence of sex hormones.

One of the main differences is in the connectivity system between hemispheres. Men have more developed connections within each hemisphere and between cortical regions, while women have more interhemispheric connections. The cerebellum shows an opposite pattern: in men, interhemispheric connections are more pronounced, whereas women have more intrahemispheric connections.

This difference, according to the scientist, affects behavioral and perceptual features. The male brain is better at precise and coordinated actions, spatial tasks, and demonstrates an advantage in reaction speed and accuracy. The female brain, thanks to active integration of analytical and intuitive perception, is better suited for solving social tasks, facial memory, and performing "social" tests.

It was also established that the female nervous system develops faster on average than the male nervous system. At the same time, under normal conditions, the female brain operates more efficiently. However, in situations of increased stress—especially if elements of novelty are involved—men demonstrate more stable cognitive activity, less confusion, and retain decision-making capabilities.

As Mayasova explained, this is related to the slower elimination of stress hormones in men. This process allows the brain to adapt to working under heightened tension.

The researcher also commented on the popular notion of intuition and emotionality. Women, owing to a greater number of interhemispheric connections, find it easier to link sensations with speech, which simplifies emotional expression. In men, these areas work more in isolation.

"Men generally have fewer connections between emotional and speech centers. This does not mean they are less emotional. They simply find it harder to verbalize their feelings. It is easier for them to express emotions through actions," she concluded.
