A Canadian who relocated with his family to the Nizhny Novgorod region, Arend Feinster, answered a question about the pasturing system he plans to use on his farm. He discussed how to save time and energy on grazing in a new video on the Countryside Acres YouTube channel.
According to Arend, many locals graze their cattle by simply tying them to a post in the field, but his approach helps free up time for other tasks.
"I try to make everything as low-effort as possible. If I have 10 cows, and I have to lead each one out of the barn into the field, drive in a post, and tie it — that's a lot of work. I would spend a lot of time moving and tying animals instead of doing something more productive. I organize my life so I can accomplish as much as possible in a day," the farmer noted.
He also mentioned that this method allows for expanding the farm without the need to hire additional staff, which may be unavailable or expensive.
He further observed that he has seen farmers who have worked hard for years but haven't adopted modern improvements. As a result, they eventually struggle, and their efforts do not pay off.
Feinster is confident that installing fences is a good investment for the future. They will last 15-20 years, and during this time, the cows can simply be released onto the fenced area without additional effort.
He plans to use a rotational grazing system, dividing a large pasture into smaller sections with an electric fence (a wire fence powered by electricity). Animals will be moved from one section to another daily.
"The idea is that each plot gets one day of intensive grazing, then about 30 days of rest. This is a proven method that is very beneficial for the soil and promotes its recovery," Arend added.
It was previously reported that the Feinster family, which has many children, was surprised by the low prices for groceries in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
