Nizhny Novgorod teenagers are implementing a project to protect owls and falcons.

A team of teenagers from the Nizhny Novgorod region, who were prize winners at the All-Russian Children's Environmental Forum last year, are implementing a project on studying and protecting owls and falcons in the Kerzhen River Nature Reserve in 2025, contributing to the national project "Environmental Well-being." In 2024, young residents of Nizhny Novgorod received recognition at the Children's Environmental Forum for their project on the study and preservation of rare predatory birds in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The key criteria for evaluating projects at the forum included practical usefulness and feasibility, innovation and originality, potential for engagement of a large number of people, and social significance—that is, the impact of the development on improving people's lives. In 2025, the forum participants from Nizhny Novgorod involved professional ornithologists in their work. Together with educators, the children traveled to the Kerzhen River Nature Reserve to research owl and falcon populations, observe chick ringing, and initiate monitoring on specially protected areas. As a result, they organized expeditions into protected zones and a "Sovo-Tour" with ornithologist Alexey Levashkin; studied the nesting sites of the bearded screech owl and the long-legged owl; documented the behavior of the owl after overwintering in Africa; launched field monitoring at "Svetlye Ozera"; created observation diaries, photo reports, and videos for educational purposes; and jointly with the Military Forest Management developed a plan to install artificial nesting sites. Today, the youth environmental project continues to grow: the children are preparing grant applications, seeking new partners, and creating a platform dedicated to rare predatory birds of the region. According to the "Kompas" National Environmental Fund, this year’s Children's Environmental Forum will be held on October 14-15 in Chelyabinsk.
