Incidents NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" - Maria Orlova From January to June 2025, the Nizhny Novgorod region experienced an increase in road accidents, injuries, and fatalities. This was reported by Vladimir Yezhov, head of the regional Traffic Police, during a press conference at the NOCI on June 30.
In six months, the region registered 1,976 traffic accidents (a 3% increase), resulting in 137 deaths (an increase of 23.4%), and 2,559 injuries of various types (almost 8%).
An increase in fatalities was observed in seven districts. However, the absolute leader of this negative trend is the regional capital.
"Despite a slight increase in traffic accidents by 0.3% and injuries by 0.7%, the number of deaths almost quadrupled. From eight people in the same period last year to 29, including two children (last year, 32 people died throughout Nizhny Novgorod). Thus, one in five traffic fatalities occurs in the regional center," said the head of the department.
The police officer emphasized that two-thirds of those who died were pedestrians. Most of them were hit outside pedestrian crossings.
Among the main causes of accidents in the Nizhny Novgorod region are driving into oncoming lanes and speeding. Every second fatal accident in the first half of 2025 involved driving into oncoming traffic, 29 of which occurred where such maneuvers are prohibited.
Every sixth accident was associated with exceeding the speed limit, and in every ninth case, drivers did not consider weather and road conditions. As a result of these violations, the number of serious injuries has risen sharply.
The department head also noted that the situation was worsened by the temporary suspension of 254 photo and video recording cameras from September 1, 2024, due to non-compliance with new legislative requirements. However, as of today, nearly all 550 complexes have been reactivated.
The number of accidents caused by drunk drivers in the Nizhny Novgorod region increased by 8%, and the number of victims involved in such accidents rose by 16%.
"Despite a 12% decrease in fatalities in these accidents, one in four fatalities in the region was caused by a drunk driver," Yezhov highlighted.
According to him, considering repeat offenses and criminal cases, about 6,000 such drivers are identified monthly by traffic police.
It was previously reported that in the Nizhny Novgorod region, during the first six months of 2025, 151 traffic incidents involving personal mobility devices (PMDs) were recorded.
