Society In Nizhny Novgorod, a plan has been developed to reduce and prevent unpleasant odors.
According to NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" in the city hall's press service, the project involves the city administration, "Nizhny Novgorod Water Utility," regional Ministry of Ecology, and Ministry of Housing and Utilities.
Experts from the interdepartmental group found that one of the main causes of the odors was illegal discharges of wastewater from enterprises, as well as unauthorized releases from septic vehicles. "Nizhny Novgorod Water Utility" has strengthened control over industrial companies connected to the sewage system. Work is also ongoing with ecological and city services to combat illegal septic operators.
Regular raids at popular discharge points have led to improvements. Offenders are appearing less frequently but might move to other areas where no complaints about hydrogen sulfide odors have been received so far.
By order of the city head, Yuri Shalabayev, the creation of an expanded network of liquid household waste reception stations is being considered. Plans include opening 6 to 12 new sites and increasing control over the accepted liquids.
During inspections of sewer pumping stations and networks, local problems were identified and resolved—manholes were sealed, covered, or backfilled, including abandoned ones. Equipment has been checked and continues to be monitored.
The Water Utility monitors air quality at its facilities daily, especially during peak hours. Additionally, MUK "Gorkomekologia" has purchased 8 new gas analyzers for additional monitoring. After the work, no exceedances of maximum permissible concentrations have been recorded near the pumping stations. Future plans include phased replacement of pumps, installation of filters, and modern gas analyzers.
Odors may also appear near the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station and sludge fields due to technological features and weather conditions. To prevent odor spread, the sludge fields have been treated with a special compound. In the next two weeks, a water curtain will be installed to help contain the odors.
Earlier, residents of Verkhnie Peschi reported complaints about sewer odors again.
