      Sugar production in Sergach caused damage to the land worth 264 million rubles. This was reported by the Nizhny Novgorod Interdistrict Environmental Prosecutor's Office.

      According to their data, during an inspection, the supervising authority revealed the illegal disposal of sugar production waste on leased agricultural lands. This led to terrain contamination and the loss of the fertile soil layer.

      Preliminary estimates suggest that environmental damage amounted to more than 264 million rubles. A criminal case has been opened under Article 246 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — violation of environmental protection rules during work.

      The investigation and mitigation of the violation's consequences are under the control of the prosecutor’s office.

      Earlier, it was reported that more than one million rubles in damages will be recovered from "AGZO-Sergach" for harm caused to soils as a result of operating a solid waste landfill.
