The Nizhny Novgorod nutritionist debunked the myth that kvass effectively quenches thirst.
July 12, 2025, 17:00 [282] Society Nutritionist Ekaterina Kulova dispelled the popular myth that kvass effectively quells thirst. In an interview with "Stacionar-Press," she emphasized that this drink is both food and beverage and urged not to rely on it as the main way to quench thirst. Ekaterina Kulova noted that although kvass has an sour taste, it still contains sugar, so it should not be used as a water substitute. For thirst quenching, it is better to choose more traditional drinks such as plain water or green tea. The expert recommends consuming kvass separately from main meals. For fans of okroshka, she offered several tips: add more fresh vegetables like greens, cucumbers, and radishes, and reduce the amount of potatoes. Sausage should be replaced with lean meat to facilitate digestion. For those who prefer lighter options, the nutritionist recommended preparing okroshka with kefir or natural yogurt. It is important to remember the recommended dose of kvass: 1–2 glasses (200–400 ml) per day. For those watching their figure, it is advisable not to exceed 200 ml. Kvass should be drunk chilled but not frozen to avoid harming the stomach. However, the drink is contraindicated for people with gastrointestinal diseases, diabetes, insulin resistance, gout, allergies, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women. Kvass contains vitamins B, PP, and E, which are beneficial for the body, but still in quite small amounts. To obtain the daily norm of vitamin B, one would need to drink about a barrel of this foamy beverage, Kulova explained. NIА "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
