Nizhny Novgorod doctors saved a patient with a 20-centimeter tumor.

      On September 2, 2026, at 13:16, SocietyDoctors from the 1st gynecological department of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital named after N.A. Semashko removed an ovarian tumor approximately 20 centimeters in diameter from a resident of Nizhny Novgorod using laparoscopic methods.

      According to the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital, the operation was complicated not only by the large size of the tumor but also by the multiple comorbidities of the patient. Initially, the woman was scheduled to undergo a traditional open surgery. However, after further assessment of the examination results, the doctors changed the surgical approach. The homogeneous structure of the tumor and the low risk of malignancy allowed for the selection of a less invasive method.

      The hospital emphasized that surgeries through small incisions are easier to tolerate, and recovery after them usually occurs faster. Obstetrician-gynecologist Anna Malysheva from the 1st gynecological department of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital stated that to safely extract the tumor, the medical team used a special surgical container. The entire operation, despite the size of the tumor, took about 40 minutes.

      According to the doctor, the size of the tumor itself does not always exclude the possibility of laparoscopic intervention.

      "In this case, the examination results allowed us to assess the risk of malignancy as low and choose a minimally invasive approach. Considering the patient's comorbidities, it was particularly important for us to minimize surgical trauma," explained Anna Malysheva.

      The postoperative period went without complications. The patient was discharged from the hospital on the eighth day after the surgery. The department added that surgeries for tumors of this size with the possibility of minimally invasive access are rare clinical cases. On average, specialists encounter such situations about once a month.

      The possibility of performing such an operation is determined individually each time, taking into account the characteristics of the tumor, examination results, and the overall condition of the patient.

      The regional health ministry noted that specialists in medical institutions in the region are constantly improving their skills. The development of modern diagnostic and treatment methods, including minimally invasive surgical technologies, remains one of the priorities of hospital work. This helps improve the quality of medical care, which is a key task of the national project "Sustained and Active Life."
