Nizhny Novgorod residents were warned about a new scam trick before September 1.

      August 23, 2026 15:00 Society Scammers have intensified ahead of the new school year. They create fake websites for school supply stores and attract customers with attractive prices, said Alexander Lunev, head of the information security training group at Yandex, in an interview with RIA Novosti. During the order process, users are prompted to enter their bank card details and confirmation codes on a fake payment page. The information obtained ends up with the scammers. Another scheme involves calls to parents and children. Fraudsters may pose as administration or admissions office employees, as well as class teachers. Under various pretexts, they ask for the code from an SMS, confirm information on a third-party website, or click on a link. The first call may only be the beginning of a fraudulent scheme. The perpetrators can continue the conversation, inventing new reasons to pressure the victim. For example, the child may be told that due to their actions, the parents supposedly have money or legal problems. Then, invoking fear and guilt, the scammers try to make them follow further instructions. Lunev noted that such attacks often rely on urgency and psychological pressure. If the interlocutor demands immediate action, asks not to tell anyone about the conversation, or threatens with consequences, this should raise alarm. For additional protection, the specialist recommends using different passwords for services, deleting unnecessary accounts, and not publishing excessive personal information on social networks and messengers. The expert emphasized that modern technologies allow for the detection of more and more fraudulent schemes, but do not replace the vigilance of the user themselves. In the case of suspicious requests, it is important to stop and verify the information received.
