Psychologists explained how to support an applicant after not being admitted.
On August 16, 2026, at 13:38 Society Psychologists have provided recommendations for parents of applicants who were unable to enroll in a university. The advice was published in the Max channel by the editor-in-chief of the medical publication "Stacionar-Press," Alexey Nikonov. According to him, failure in exams or insufficient scores for admission becomes a serious challenge for the entire family. For a teenager aged 17-18, such a situation is often perceived as the destruction of all life plans and turns into a severe psychological crisis. Specialists emphasize that the reaction of parents is particularly important. It can either worsen the child's condition or, conversely, help them accept the situation and adapt to new circumstances. In the first two days, psychologists advise not to devalue the teenager's feelings and to avoid reproaches. Such words, including phrases like "you should have prepared better," undermine trust and increase stress. At this moment, the teenager especially needs emotional support and a sense of self-worth regardless of exam results. Parents are also advised to remain calm, give the child a break of one to two weeks to restore their nervous system. When the emotional state stabilizes, further options can be discussed. Among possible scenarios, specialists mention a gap year in studies, which can help determine a future profession and prepare for retaking exams. Additionally, it is worth considering enrollment in a college or training in vocational courses. Psychologists note that the most important condition for effective support is to pass the initiative to the teenager themselves. In this situation, parents should remain a support and consultants. If the child experiences apathy or signs of depression for an extended period, specialists advise not to delay seeking help from a teenage psychologist. It was previously reported that in the Nizhny Novgorod region, the number of applications to universities increased by more than 30% in 2026, and the passing score also rose.
