Nizhny Novgorod residents have become twice as active in checking their reproductive health at clinics.
Young residents of Nizhny Novgorod have become more active in checking their reproductive health at clinics. This conclusion was drawn by the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Center for Public Health and Medical Prevention after analyzing the statistics of health screenings. If in the first 6 months of 2025, about 107 thousand Nizhny Novgorod residents checked their reproductive health, then in the same period this year, nearly 215 thousand did, which is twice as many.
According to the chief physician of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Center for Public Health and Medical Prevention, the chief freelance specialist of the regional health ministry, Natalia Savitskaya, such positive dynamics are expected. The government is currently paying special attention to issues of maternal and child health, supporting future parents and families. These are crucial components of the national project "Family."
"This statistic is also the result of the active efforts of health organizers and the medical professionals themselves. Currently, a family health screening format is developing and gaining popularity in the Nizhny Novgorod region, as well as practices for conducting examinations in the late evening and on weekends. All this is done to make visits to the doctor as convenient as possible for young people and families with children," reminded Natalia Savitskaya.
Nizhny Novgorod medical professionals reminded that regular care for health and participation in preventive measures is an investment in achieving the goals of the national project "Long and Active Life." Specialists explained why preventive measures are so important for citizens of reproductive age and what specifically is included in the concept of "reproductive health screening."
"The regional trend is confirmed locally: if in the entire year of 2025, about 5.6 thousand people checked their reproductive health at City Clinic No. 7, then already now, in just over 7 months of 2026, more than 5.2 thousand patients have done so. Thanks to educational work, residents know what exactly they can receive during a visit to an obstetrician-gynecologist and urologist. It is very encouraging to see cases where Nizhny Novgorod residents come to the therapist's appointment as couples and declare their plans for having a child and their intention to undergo a check-up. This is the right, conscious approach to parenthood," said Ivan Koliparov, a physician in the medical prevention department of City Clinic No. 7 in Nizhny Novgorod.
The doctor explained that at the first stage of assessing reproductive health, women undergo detailed questioning and an examination by a doctor—an obstetrician-gynecologist, including a visual examination and palpation of the breasts. All patients have a smear taken for flora, and depending on their age, for the presence of sexually transmitted infections, the presence of high carcinogenic risk human papillomavirus DNA, and oncocytology. The doctor also provides individual counseling on reproductive health issues, reproductive attitudes, and motivation for having children.
If any complaints or deviations are identified based on the results of the first stage, the patient is referred to the second stage of reproductive health screening. Depending on age and indications, this may also include laboratory studies of biological materials, ultrasound of the pelvic organs, and breast ultrasound. A follow-up consultation with an obstetrician-gynecologist is mandatory.
For men, the first stage includes at least detailed questioning, examination by a urologist, and consultation with a specialist. If there are complaints or deviations, a second stage is also provided: the specialist may prescribe a spermogram, ultrasound of the prostate and other organs of the male reproductive system, and testing biological materials for the presence of sexually transmitted infections. The second stage also includes a consultation with a urologist.
"According to statistics, four out of ten patients receive a referral for the second stage of reproductive health screening. We urge Nizhny Novgorod residents not to postpone a preventive visit to the doctor, as the earlier a disease is detected, the easier and more effective the treatment process will be. One should not forget about the risks of developing oncological diseases: cancer of the reproductive system is common in both women and men of various ages. The key to a quality and long life is the habit of checking health even when nothing is bothering you," concluded Ivan Koliparov.
In the first half of 2025, about 499 thousand Nizhny Novgorod residents underwent general health screenings, while in the first half of the current year, over 502 thousand did. While the overall figure has not changed significantly, the number of patients of reproductive age (from 18 to 49 years) who underwent screening has noticeably increased.
Let us remind you that citizens aged 18 to 39 undergo health screenings once every three years, while citizens over 40 years old do so annually. Preventive medical examinations should be conducted by all residents of the region every year. All procedures are performed free of charge, and employers are required to provide employees with a paid day off for the duration of preventive measures.
Health screenings or preventive medical examinations can be conducted at clinics based on place of residence or work. Registration is done at the reception desk, directly in the office or medical prevention department, during an appointment with a local therapist, a specialist doctor, or a paramedic. You can also register for a health screening through a chat-bot in MAX or the regional medical services portal.
National projects have been implemented in the country since 2025 by order of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. The national project "Long and Active Life" aims for an expected increase in life expectancy by 2030 and involves updating clinics, outpatient clinics, and midwifery points, attracting qualified medical personnel to medical institutions, applying new approaches in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic diseases, improving emergency medical care and rehabilitation systems, developing a network of national research centers, and digitizing the industry.
The national project "Family" includes activities that promote the comprehensive development of families: expanding support measures, creating conditions for the active longevity of the older generation, and ensuring quality and accessible medical care.
