Five residents of Nizhny Novgorod sought medical attention after burns from hogweed.

On August 13, 2026, at 10:43 AM, Society. Since the beginning of May this year, five people have suffered chemical burns after contact with giant hogweed. All of them sought help at the Burn Center of the PIMU University Clinic. This was reported by pravda-nn.ru, citing the medical institution. Among the victims this season are only adults. No children with such burns have been brought to the center this year. No fatalities have been recorded either. Most patients had relatively small burns: four people had an affected area of 3 to 5% of their body surface. After receiving medical assistance and therapy, they were referred for outpatient treatment. One more patient required inpatient treatment. In June, a 57-year-old man was admitted with burns to his lower limbs, which covered 12% of his body surface. He spent five days in the hospital, where he was under medical supervision and underwent comprehensive treatment. After that, the patient was discharged. Recall that earlier a doctor explained why burns occur upon contact with giant hogweed and how to reduce health risks. Additionally, at the beginning of August, the Nizhny Novgorod region approved lists of dangerous invasive plants, which included only one species - giant hogweed. This was done to implement the regional law on combating invasive plants. The document provides for liability for failing to take measures: fines for individuals can reach up to 50,000 rubles, and for legal entities up to 700,000 rubles. After the official approval of the lists, authorized agencies received the right to impose these sanctions. Furthermore, the NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" editorial team previously learned about the first results of a pilot project, within which artificial intelligence began to be used to combat giant hogweed.
