The expert examination did not approve the project for the liquidation of the tar ponds near Nizhny Novgorod.

      On July 29, 2026, at 11:41, the Federal Autonomous Institution "Main Department of State Expertise" issued a negative conclusion regarding the project for the liquidation of an object of accumulated environmental harm - "Ponds for the accumulation of acidic tar from the former AOOT 'Firma Varya'." This is reported in the Unified State Register of Real Estate.

      The matter concerns the territory in quarter No. 56 of the Kozinsky Forestry of the Balakhna District Forestry.

      The project documentation and the results of engineering surveys were submitted for state expertise. The type of work is defined as reconstruction.

      The customer is the administration of the Balakhna municipal district. The project documentation was prepared by LLC "Rastrim NN" and the State Budgetary Institution of the Nizhny Novgorod Region "Ecology of the Region."

      It was previously reported that regional authorities plan to submit four objects of accumulated harm for participation in the federal project "General Cleanup" in 2026. The list includes the open-type fuel oil storage "Nefteyamy," the tar ponds of the former AOOT "Firma Varya" in the Balakhna district and at the 21st kilometer of the Moscow highway in Nizhny Novgorod, as well as the industrial waste landfill of the former PO "Korund" ("Caprolactam") in the area of the workers' settlement of Bolshoye Kozino. The projects are undergoing state ecological and/or expertise by the Federal Autonomous Institution "Main State Expertise of Russia."

      After the necessary expertise is completed, the objects are planned to be submitted for selection in the federal project. If the application is approved, work may begin in 2027.
