This was reported by NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" in the regional Ministry of Agriculture and Food Resources. The work is carried out before the plant begins to bloom. On agricultural lands, it is performed by the ministry's subordinate institution "Agrotechkhimcenter." This year, the activities were financed from the regional budget and covered 27 municipalities. Among them are Ardatovsky, Arzamassky, Balakhinsky, Bogorodsky, Bolshimurashkinsky, Varnavinsky, Vachsky, Voznesensky, Voskresensky, Gaginsky, Gorodetsky, Diveyevsky, Krasnobakovsky, Lyskovsky, Pilninsky, Semyonovsky, Sergachsky, Sosnovsky, Spassky, Tonkinsky, Tonshayevsky, Uren, Shatkovsky districts, as well as the cities of Bor, Pervomaisk, Chkalovsk, and the Kstovo district of Nizhny Novgorod. For comparison, in 2025, 700 hectares of hogweed were destroyed in 19 municipalities at the expense of the regional budget. According to the regional Ministry of Agriculture, the area overgrown with Sosnovsky hogweed in the region has remained virtually unchanged over the past three years and currently amounts to about 7 thousand hectares. The fight against the plant is complicated by its biological characteristics. One plant, on average, produces about 20 thousand seeds, while individual specimens can produce up to 100 thousand. Even a single isolated bush can form an entire population, and the seeds can remain in the soil for more than five years. It was reported that artificial intelligence has begun to be used to combat hogweed in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
