Pediatrician Elena Radchenko spoke about summer infections in children.

July 14, 2026 07:00 Society The belief that summer is not a season for children's infections is a clear misconception: warm weather, trips to the sea, swimming in pools, and an abundance of fresh fruits create favorable conditions for the spread of pathogenic microorganisms. The child's body, facing a sharp change in climate and routine, becomes particularly vulnerable. Pediatrician Elena Radchenko told 360.ru about the summer infections that most often affect children and provided recommendations for ensuring a safe vacation. According to the doctor, intestinal infections such as rotavirus, salmonellosis, and pathogenic E. coli are most common in summer. These diseases often arise from consuming unwashed products, contaminated water, and improper food storage. The main danger of these infections is rapid dehydration, which can be especially dangerous for children. The risk of contracting enteroviral infections also increases in summer, which manifest as a characteristic rash on the palms and soles, dryness around the mouth, and sore throat (herpangina). In warm weather, the likelihood of contracting parasitic infections such as enterobiasis, ascariasis, and giardiasis increases. These diseases are transmitted through contact with sand, dirty toys, and unwashed hands. One of the prominent symptoms of enterobiasis is itching in the anal area, especially at night. To prevent these diseases, it is important to follow simple hygiene rules: thoroughly wash hands, fruits, and vegetables before consumption, drink only boiled or bottled water, and ensure that the child does not swallow water while swimming in bodies of water. It is also necessary to adhere to a regular sleep, nutrition, and active rest schedule in the fresh air, which will help strengthen the child's immune system. Elena Radchenko strongly recommends that parents consult a pediatrician at the first signs of illness. Timely medical assistance can help avoid complications and recover from the infection more quickly. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
