      How to save a drowning person without endangering yourself?

      International rescue protocols ILCOR recommend the concept 'Voice, Throw, Reach.' Entering the water is the most extreme and dangerous step.

      1. Voice. Shout clear, loud commands: 'Swim to my voice! Turn on your back!' In panic, consciousness narrows; a firm commanding voice can bring the person back to reality.

      2. Throw. Look for 'household' rescue devices. Throw them not at the person but right in front of them: an empty 5-liter bottle, a closed backpack, or a ball.

      3. Reach. Use 'extenders' for your arms: branches, paddles, long scarves, or belts.

      Never stand upright at the edge of a pier or slippery bank. Lie on your stomach with your legs spread wide, and only then reach out the object.

      If you still have to swim: approach ONLY from behind. If the person turns towards you — dive underwater. A drowning person fears depth and will let go of you immediately.

      Grab them from behind under the armpits or by the hair. Place their head on your chest and swim on your back, using your legs.

      What to do on the shore? Forget Soviet posters where a person is laid belly down on a knee and 'squeezes' out water. Most often, this will cause harm.

      There is almost no water in the lungs due to a spasm of the ligaments; it is in the stomach. Trying to 'pour it out' will cause vomiting, which will block the airways. If the person is unconscious and not breathing — immediately lay them on their back and start cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
