625 lynxes inhabit the Nizhny Novgorod region in 2026. This was reported by the NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" citing the regional ministry of forestry and wildlife protection. The agency noted that the predator's population has been steadily increasing over the past five years and has likely not yet reached its maximum values. Specialists attribute the population growth to the increase in the number of key prey species—hares and roe deer. The dynamics of recent years confirm this trend: in 2022, there were 339 lynxes in the region, in 2023—402, in 2024—499, and in 2025—622 individuals. Most lynxes inhabit the forested areas of the Zavolzhye region. The Varna district has become the most densely populated with these animals—96 individuals. The Sokolsky district has 51 lynxes, the Shakhunsky—45, the Semyonovsky district—44, the Uren district—32, and the Voskresensky—31. In the interfluve of the Volga and Oka rivers, there are solitary individuals. In the southern part of the region, lynxes inhabit forests from the upper reaches of the Kudya and Sereja rivers to the Oka and the upper reaches of small rivers flowing into the Moksha. In the Pre-Volga region, the highest number was noted in Vyksa—40 animals. In the Navashinsky and Buturlinovsky districts, 28 lynxes were registered.
