Sights of Sortavala and its surroundings

Sortavala is one of the oldest cities in Karelia: the first mentions of the settlement date back to the 12th century, with the official founding date being 1632. The city is located on the shores of the Lappajärvi Bay of Lake Ladoga. In recent years, it has become one of the most visited tourist cities in Northwestern Russia—thanks to the Ruskeala Mountain Park, Valaam Island, and the Ladoga Skerries. However, the city itself is not just a transit point. Finnish architecture, the only wooden sculpture museum in the world, panoramic mountains, and an island with a fortress—this requires a full day. Detailed articles about each place with photos and routes can be found on the portal sortavala.city.

In the city: Finnish architecture from the early 20th century—the Leander House (national romanticism, 1905, architect Eliel Saarinen), the building of the United Bank of the Northern Countries (Art Nouveau), the town hall, and the lyceum building. The center of Sortavala looks like a small Finnish town—a unique case for Russia. The Kronid Gogolev Museum features wood carvings from solid linden pieces, large panoramic canvases, and free admission. The embankment of Lappajärvi Bay includes a pier, a café, and views of Ladoga. Mount Kuhavuori is the best viewpoint: a panorama of the city and the lake, a 15-minute climb, with the best time being sunset. Vakkosalmi Park is an old park with a concert venue and a bench on a rock.

Nearby the city: Riekkalan Saari Island (10 minutes across the bridge)—the largest island in Ladoga, covering an area of 50 sq. km. The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker from the 19th century, the ruins of the Linnaavuori fortress from the 12th-14th centuries, three mountains with observation platforms (Riuttavuori, Salokallio, Vorssunmäki), glamping "Berry Village," and horseback riding. In August, there is a trail running festival with distances from 7 to 55 km.

In the surroundings: Ruskeala Mountain Park (33 km from Sortavala)—a marble canyon with turquoise water, underground tunnels, and a retro train from the city (1 hour, tickets from 1,200 ₽). The canyon is illuminated in the evening—if you arrive by car, it's worth staying until dark. Valaam (a meteor 50 minutes from the pier)—an ancient monastery from the 14th century on the archipelago, hermitages, and gardens. The Ladoga Skerries (boat trip 2-3 hours, from 2,500 ₽)—650 rocky islands, granite cliffs, pines on the rocks, and a national park covering 122,000 hectares. To see all the attractions of Sortavala and its surroundings, at least 3 full days are needed. From St. Petersburg—270 km (4 hours via A-121) or "Lastochka" (5 hours). Book accommodation in advance: a catalog with prices, ratings, and reviews is available in the hotels and accommodations section of Sortavala.
